When children start school, they first learn "high-frequency" words. These are words like 'earn', 'learn', 'burn', 'turn', etc. Beyond the high-frequency words come the more descriptive, precise words that make reading and writing richer. For example, the word 'walk' is a high-frequency word. The words 'stagger', 'trudge', 'amble', and 'trot' can all describe types of walking and are the next step in a child's vocabulary. These are sometimes referred to as Tier 2 words in schools.
With our team of machine learning specialists and lexicographers, we identified 10,000 of these words that matter to academic success. We call learning those words the 10,000 Word Journey.
Currently we have the first step of this journey available in our narrative programme, exposing children to around 1,500 words to make an engaging and novel story. We are working on further products such as persuasion words for older students and an early years product for younger children.
