We structure the workbook to teach young people at least one word each day. We base this on the neuroscientific principle of ‘spaced repetition.’ According to research, our brains can only recall up to seven items at a time. The number can be as low as four.
What helps solidify our recall is repetition – but that repetition has to happen over an extended period of time. As anyone who has ever crammed for an exam knows, you may be able to cram enough for the exam itself. But days (sometimes as little as a few hours) later, you realize you don't remember what you learned.
With our workbooks, we encourage children to learn one word a day. As you build up your word knowledge, remember to go back and refresh your memory by flipping through your word cards.
